ACTION ALERT!

We all agree that a climbing management plan (CMP) is needed to provide consistent guidelines. To introduce the CMP process, BNF just released a Story Map to educate stakeholders on climbing history and resources that overlap with climbing areas. The CMP and Story Map should be specific to climbing management in the Bitterroot.

Access Fund and WMTCC submitted a detailed list of recommended edits to the first draft—some were accepted, but many were not. We are particularly concerned that the section on fixed anchors in Wilderness does not accurately reflect the U.S.F.S’s current climbing management policies.

The Story Map ends its narrative on Wilderness climbing management in the year 2000—leaving out two decades of important advancements in federal climbing policy, law, and management. This is a significant oversight that misleads readers into an antiquated perception of federal climbing management practices.

Because this Story Map will serve as the backdrop for development of the new CMP, the stakes of misconceptions in the Story Map are high.

WESTERN MONTANA CLIMBERS COALITION

WHO WE ARE

We're a nonprofit founded to support continued access to climbing areas, safe and environmentally conscientious development of new sites, climbing for climbers of all abilities, and continued development of opportunities for young climbers. We have forged an alliance with the Access Fund, and we, with land managers, will be a voice for the climbing community . We'll also have a little fun sponsoring events, trail days, and social opportunities for climbers across Western Montana.
